Model Releases - What are they, and why do we need them?

A model release is a legal document typically signed by the subject of a photo granting permission to publish or display the photograph in one way or another. There is more depth to this, but I feel this will suffice in a general understanding of the topic.

This is extremely important as the photographer when taking photos for the obvious reason that there could be a large amount of legal ramifications were there to be a photo taken of an unwilling subject. The model release in a general form is a protection for the photographer to publish and use the photos garnished whomever the subject of the photo may be.
